Our Work

Since the 1960s, we have been at the forefront of efforts to protect air, land and water resources. Our approach to environmental protection and pollution control is one of problem solving. The League’s environmental goals aim to prevent ecological degradation, and to reduce and control pollutants before they go down the sewer, up the chimney or into the landfill.

Fighting Climate Change

With a commitment to renewable energy, the League of Women Voters stands ready to hold polluters accountable.

Recent Actions:

Joan Divor testified in support of SCR43, a bill that proposes a constitutional amendment to make State trustee of public natural resources and guarantee to the people other environmental rights.

The League of Women Voters of New Jersey signed a lame-duck energy justice coalition letter urging the Legislature to promote a clean energy economy.

Eleanor Gruber, Co-Chair of LWVNJ's Natural Resources Committee, testified against the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission's application to set up a gas-fired power plant in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark.

We work to protect our water supply, tackling a number of threats including pipelines and pollution.

Recent Actions:

December 6, 2022: LWVNJ's Natural Resources Committee submitted a letter to Governor Murphy ahead of the Delaware River Basin Commission vote, urging the governor to vote for a full ban on fracking. Read the letter here.
